A DIY Home Gym You will Love
A few weeks ago my fabulous hubby created a special place for me in the garage!! Right, soooo… I know what you may be thinking, first off that the garage is “his” space, his den, man cave, workshop, whatever the case may be.
But lets be honest, those who know that I make jewelry…. ahh hem… know that when we split our twins into their own rooms, well, I lost my craft room. My beloved craft room, that went into several places and boxes and bins all over our home, one station in the craft room was the hand stamping aka jewelry metalsmith table bench which went into one corner nook of our garage. And this is was TOTALLY fine with me, because metal stamping and hammering can be loud and super annoyingly noisy, and messy. Therefore, having a “she spot” work bench in the garage was no big deal, because it was like having a His and Hers workbenches out there! BUT….
That is NOT, the special place I’m talking about today!! Nope. Although, I’ve been thinking about the jewelry table a lot lately…. I think it misses me, its jealous of the monograms I’ve been making. Okay… let me FOCUS…
I’m talking about the “OTHER” special place in the garage that hubs created for me!!! You want to know what it is? Well by the title and picture at the beginning of this post, I’m sure you know by now, that it is a “mini” home gym!!!
Yes!!! A workout space for yours truly, well, for anyone in my family who wants to sweat with me, or for any friends who feel like doing a workout with me.
 Designating a Workout Space
This little mini corner of the garage was really easy to create and set up.
We basically walled off or hid the ugly of the “real” work bench of tools, paint cans, dry wall stilts…. seriously who has those? Don’t forget the garden gadgets, beach toys and all that lovely stuff in garage… yes we hung some old ikea curtains I had up to cover it up and make it appear to be a gray wall. Yay, I like gray!!
Then, we painted a section of the wall gray. I didn’t want to be distracted by an ugly wall that needed to be painted anyways. Side Note: Seriously, the whole garage could’ve been painted all pretty, but it is a garage after all, and well, just by doing the section we did it sort of designated the space. So, a section it was… You can see the line that runs up to the ceiling.
Next up, I took an old laminated upper cabinet with two doors on it that my mother had. She was getting a new kitchen, and was pretty much tossing this thing out anyways, so I took it and spray painted it white. I thought it would add a pop to the gray wall. Insert heart face emoji here! I needed the cabinet to store my dvds and dvd player in and having this little cabinet was perfect for the job.
Yes, that’s right, I am a one of those girls who workouts with videos. I am a Beachbody girl after all….  and well that’s pretty much, just like being a regular girl except she has goals and reaches them, except its even cooler. All you have to do is just let me know, and I can show you how to be a cool girl like me too.
After we mounted the small cabinet, I then added the little metal rack underneath to store my weights on. I don’t have many weights…. I am currently looking to get more “cute colorful ones” while I work up to a higher weight. I am just being honest, I do use those little bitty ole weights.  However, in my twenties… I did workout with like 20-25 pound weights before pretty often. Funny how time changes things. I will get back there… baby steps.
Next, hubby surprised me and got me these lovely horse mats! Yes, horse stall mats. He knows the way to this girls’ heart, I tell ya! Just get her some horse stall mats. We read that these mats were much more sturdier and stable for bouncing and jumping around on versus the alternatives out there advertised as gym floor mats. And boy are they ever! They are very heavy too. Just look at them loaded up in the car. It took two guys and two trips from the Tractor Supply store to get a “mini” gym floor. But it was worth, and it makes me happy to have floor I can dance and bounce on without any worry of it slipping out form under me.
Lastly, we hung an old tv and connected to the dvd player. We moved the old treadmill my in laws gave me to use when I was preparing for my half marathon. It still works great so we placed in a section just off of the mini gym area in the jewelry stamping area. But, it is positioned just right to see the tv, should one care to watch a movie while running or something. LOL.
All in all, I think it turned out really well! So far so good, I am enjoying it, even in the hot summer days! I am in the process of “making over my mornings”, more on that idea later, but this mini gym is one piece to that idea.
My goal is to move the majority of my workouts to the morning. Right now, I sometimes miss the morning (nobody’s perfect right) and I end up doing them in the evening or not at all (just some real talk). This space will allow me to bust a move early while my family still sleeps without distracting them. I’ve been known to use my iphone to workout on demand while in the kitchen… which works when necessary, but now, a designated space makes easier where I don’t have to worry as much about those distractions.
By creating this space, working out seems more fun. Plus, bonus… I sweat more in the garage, especially in Florida. No worries, I do have a fan I can turn on, and I don’t mind the occasional visit from a little cookie monster or two!!!
I have to say, I can’t take credit for the idea.
My coach works out in her garage, and my up-line coaches, who are amazing, actually have a beautiful home gym which is very inspiring. And without even realizing it, the three of them together motivated me to create a unique space (with the help of my hubby) designated just for getting it done, and pushing play.
Do you have a home gym or a workout space? Leave me a comment and let me know or share your space with me!
