Craft Supplies from the Dollar Store
Find some of the best craft supplies from the dollar store. Stores like the Dollar Tree are a great place to source crafting materials and supplies along with blank items to decorate and DIY into beautiful creations. Check out the Dollar Store Craft SUpplies list below for all the items to stock up on for all of your crafting needs.Â
The dollar store is usually my first stop for craft items when to come creating new DIY home decor items and crafts. I typically can find an item such as plate ware, chipboard signs, seasonal decor and ribbon to change or DIY into something on-trend for my home.
I’ve been a crafter and DIYer for a very long time. Most likely I was DIYing my own projects long before I even knew what the acronym DIY meant.
So when it comes to sourcing craft supplies or materials there are only a few stores or local places that come into mind when it comes to stocking up on supplies.
Most craft stores are given, like Joanns, Micheals, and even Hobby Lobby. However, one place that might tend to get overlooked from time is the dollar store. There are a few different well-know dollar stores, but my absolute favorite is the Dollar Tree.
If you have followed on this blog for any amount of time, you might notice that in almost every DIY or craft that I share one item or supply comes from the Dollar Tree. And over the past year and a half, the Dollar Tree has been my first go-to when it comes to coming up with new DIYs.
More than likely, it is because everything in the store is $1 and ya kind of crazy on the cheap, and because it is literally the first store I pass when I leave my house that actually carries any kind of item that might be used for crafting.
Plus, when I took over the craft director role for my moms’ group at my church, the budget had to be low per person, so naturally, the dollar store was the best and first place I’d start to come up with our monthly craft.
For all these reasons and more it is a no-brainer for me. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission but it is at no additional cost to you)! Read my full disclosure here.
So, I have complied over 30 items I source, use or have used in all of my crafts. I am sharing that list with you today along with pictures, so you know exactly what to look for and keep an eye out for. Some items are seasonal, but more times than not, you can always order online!
Craft Supplies from the Dollar Store
The few two items are mainly for those crafters who own a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine. These two items are a hack to using brand name vinyl and transfer tape. They work great for the newer craft cutting machine owner for practicing with vinyl and transferring vinyl to items or projects.
Transfer Tape –Â this clear contact paper called Magic Cover. It is the absolute best stuff to use when transferring vinyl to your project’s surface. And it is the cheapest transfer tape I’ve been able to find. It comes in a decent size amount and for only $1 dollar you beat it.
I have pictured it with regular Walmart craft contact paper (which also works for about $5) and the Cricut brand transfer tape which ranges between $10 and $14 per roll.
Vinyl – This is not actually vinyl, but it works like vinyl and is great for stencil making or the novice crafter who need practice using their Cricut and Silhouette machine. You won’t wast your good brand vinyl when it comes to learning your machine. And if your project happens to come out perfect using this, then you have totally cut your crafting costs way down.
It comes in limited colors such as blue, pink and green and I am only able to find it during back to school times during the year. So stock up!
Scraper Tool –Â This little pack of tools is used mainly for craft sculpting but they also work and help when weeding projects from your cutting mat so I decided to list them here.
There is also a metal scrapper you can pick up form the paint supplies section that will also work. There are two sizes. I would go with the small one since most projects you are likely to do will not require such a large tool.
Craft Supplies for the Non-Cricut and Silhouette Crafter
If you don’t own a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine just yet, then here are some materials and supplies you will want to look at stocking up on in your stash.
Vinyl Lettering – Perfect for creating designs that need or use words. You can easily write out whatever words or phrases you want and apply to your craft designs.
Poster Stickers –Â These are also great to use if you do not own a craft cutting machine. These come in different colors and few other fonts separate from those listed above. Some options include patterns and even glitter.
Vinyl Decals and Designs – Dollar Tree also carries a pretty good selection of vinyl designs and lettering pre-made for you. You just have to peel and stick to whatever design you are creating. Some of them are super cute.
Some decals might even make great rewards systems for online teaching. You can read my post about online ESL teaching here.Â
Crafts Items used as Blanks
Some of the best craft item blanks come from the Dollar Tree.
This is especially awesome if you are creating centerpieces for a wedding or an event, or even making multiplies of one particular craft item because you can stock up in bulk for only $1 per item. Some of the favorites that I use over and over are below.
Chalkboards –Â these are perfect for small DIY craft signs or decor items. I’ve used the Dollar Tree chalkboards on more than one occasion for all sorts of crafts.
One of my favorites is this Dollar Tree DIY that I paired with a wood frame. Check out the full tutorials here!
Ceramic Mugs –Â Mugs are also a favorite that I use very often. I used these to create simple DIY gifts for my kids’ teachers at school or even have made co-workers small little gifts using Dollar Tree mugs. Fill will some inexpensive candy, and personalize with some vinyl and you have the perfect little mug gift!.
Check out this tutorial I did a while back using tall dollar store mugs. They really do make the perfect item to personalize.
Glassware – The Dollar Tree also carries a variety of glassware that you can personalize with vinyl. Glass mugs, to plates, vases, cooking wear, and even beer stein mugs. These make the perfect blanks to use over and over again.
Check out this glass mug and beer stein tutorial that I did showing how to etch glass!
Glass Mason Jars – this is a given, but just in case you didn’t know the Dollar Tree also carries mason jars along with a variety of other types of jars form time to time. Some of my favorites are the small milk jars. Mason jars are $1 just about anywhere you go however, they are sole in cases of 12. At the Dollar Tree, you can buy 1 or 3, it is totally up to you the quantity you get.
Stretched Canvas –Â Stretched canvas or canvas panels can be found at the Dollar Tree. They are on the smaller size but they are perfect for simple DIYs and home decor.
I have used the stretched canvas frames before to create a window frame as decor. It was a super inexpensive way to get the window frame look without having a heavy bulky window frame.
Craft AdhesivesÂ
Another item to consider stocking up on form the dollar store is glue and adhesives. The Dollar Tree carries a wide variety of glues and adhesives listed below. I have pretty much used every one.
Glue Sticks –Â Perfect to use with your glue gun. The Dollar Tree does not sell glue guns, however, you can find packs of glue sticks for most small glue guns.
Check out this tiered tray I made using hot glue to hold the project together.
Super Glue –Â Superglue is stocked at the dollar store and comes in a variety of packs and brands. I’ve used most of them at one time or another and they are perfect to have should something break or come undo.
Mod Podge – Mod Podge is a must-have for any crafter. Mod Podge is available at the dollar store in a small bottle. Use mod podge to seal craft and DIY projects and as an adhesive.
Tacky Glue – Aleenes Tacky glue is also a must-have crafters item. I just priced this exact same bottle of tacky glue at Micheals craft store for $3.99. Save a few bucks and pick up a bottle or two from the Dollar Tree.
Craft Paint Supplies from the Dollar Store
The dollar Tree carries a pretty good small but mighty craft paint selection.
Craft Paints – They sell several colors and tubes of craft paint. I have used these acrylic paints before and they do have a pretty good pigment in them.
Poster Paints –Â These are especially good to have on hand in the Spring and Summer months. They can add a punch of color to any project. Plus some are even glitter paint.
Paint Brushes, Paint Trays, and Painting Tools –Â Â These three items are a must when it comes to any painting DIY project. Stock up in bulk from the Dollar Tree. You can easily wash these and reuse all of these supplies.
Foam Brushes – Foam Brushes are perfect for all of those DIYs that require chalk paint. The Dollar Tree sells these in a variety pack, and you can use and then toss. I love to use these when making custom vinyl and epoxy cups.
Furniture Markers –Â Furniture markers might seem like an odd item to get but you will want to have these on hand. If you stain any wood items these are great for fixing any missed spots. And if the project is small enough, you can use these markers as opposed to getting out you can of stain. I stained a stretched canvas using only one of these markers. You couldn’t tell the difference.
Wreath Supplies
Floral Wreath Forms –Â The dollar store often carries a few different sizes and types of floral foam and wreath forms. These are great to stock up on if you are big into making wreaths. I know several wreath makers who only buy their forms from the Dollar Tree.
Burlap Ribbon –Â Burlap Ribbon and an assortment of other ribbons can be found at the dollar store. I tend to usually grab my favorites which include these burlap shades.
Floral Picks & Embellishments – You can always find a pretty good mix of florals and picks at the dollar store. There are also some pretty good embellishments as well. They change seasonally, which is fun to see what is always coming in for next season.
Floral Moss – perfect for adding a little filler to any floral arrangement or display.
Dollar Store Craft Embellishments
Jute Twine – I love using Dollar Tree just twine for lots of projects. You can get a 3 pack from the dollar store that will last you a long while.
Wood Shapes –Â These cute little wood shapes are great for customizing and creating ornaments or embellishments to use on your craft projects.
Wood Beads – Wood beads make great garlands or tassels for home decor. Right now the dollar store only sells these colored variety packs but, you could easily put them on a skewer and paint them all a solid color.
Craft Business Supplies
I decided to add a small Craft Business supplies section to the bottom of this list because if you run an Etsy shop or a craft business, and ship any items, then the Dollar Tree is the perfect place to get a small stock of shipping supplies. Or perfect to pick up if you happen to run out before your next shipment arrives.
Bubble Mailers – perfect o mail items 5X7 in size. Use these for prints, stickers or even decals that you might ship.
Bubble Wrap & Boxes – Running a craft business around the holidays can get hectic to stock up on boxes and bubble wrap to ensure your items are packaged with care.
