Mother’s Day DIY Centerpiece
Mother’s Day is fast approaching as you know, and its a day to show mom you care and lover her back thanking her all she to raise and take care of you.
Today I wanted to share with you a quick and simple DIY gift that can double as a centerpiece for any time or just in time for Mother’s Day. You can do this DIY using some basic household items, that you may already have in your home. If you don’t have them, you can pick them up at any big box store to make this simple gift for your mom for Mother’s Day!
Or use as a centerpiece which adds a nice Springy touch to your table!
For this project I actually repurposed the cans from some canned vegetables that I had when I making dinner one night for my family. I got the idea to save the cans and turn them into miniature vases to hold flowers for my mom on Mother’s Day.
In this particular project, I had three cans that I used to create this little cluster of vases of flowers. You can use as many cans as you want in various sizes, but in my example, I used three. Two medium sized cans and one small soup can.
Additional supplies you will need are some acrylic paints and some twine or some ribbon. Of course, you are going to need some fresh-cut flowers. I purchased my flowers from the grocery store and just picked them up when I shopping. They had a couple of bunches on display, and I just grabbed a pretty bundle of twelve pink and white roses. I think they were around $9 for the dozen.
If you prefer a more luxurious touch, you can always find great bouquets from Bouqs’ flower delivery. After all, Mother’s day comes only once a year, all the more reason to make the occasion extra special!
To make the centerpieces make sure your cans are clean and dry. Make sure there’s no rough edges on the inside and remove the labels from the outside. As you can see pictured here.
Once they were good and dry, I began to paint my tin cans. My cans were like a gunmetal silver and using simple basic acrylic paints I had in my crafting stash. I wasn’t really too worried about the metal showing through as I wanted it to look more rustic. I did do two coats of each color on the cans and just brushed it around with a simple paintbrush. I let the first coat dry, and then went back and applied a second coat. For the teal color, I wanted it to be a little bit lighter than the color paint I had on hand, so I took some white acrylic paint and kind of blended it to lighten up the teal color. If you want your cans to be more vibrant in color you could always do an extra coat or use spray paint on the cans.
Once the paint was good and dry, and it maybe took a couple hours to dry. I came back to my cans, and kind of positioned them, and wrapped the twine around them, knotted and tied a bow. In the picture here though you’ll see where I actually wrapped twine around each individual can, which I liked a little bit better. By doing it this way, I could make them easier for transporting, but I think if you’re going to be doing this as a centerpiece, you may want to wrap all three cans together in a cluster using the twine, sort of making one big section or vase. I think that would also look really good if you had some ribbon, or some burlap rope even, to wrap them all together into one central vase.
Lastly, I just took my flowers, put some water in the cans, and cut the flowers down to size. Each stem was a little bit different just to kind of give it a asymmetrical look. Each stem was cut to a different height slightly giving the variation in the three tin can vases. I did use some of the leaves that were left over, that had fallen off to fill in the gaps between the roses. I put about four roses to each little can, and then did them at different sizes, and then it was complete.
This is a very simple, very easy to do, and very quick project that is very beautiful. If you’re hosting someone over for dinner, or if you are having your mom over for dinner on Mother’s Day its sure to add something extra special.
Hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial.
[…] Now, I may not get around to it right away, but I’ve got the idea tucked away ready to pull out and work on when it is ready, especially if the idea is something seasonal. And, I have it now saved so I won’t forget!! Its genius. No good, or even half way decent crafting idea will get lost!! So for example, you remember my post on Mother’s Day DIY flower centerpieces? If you don’t, you can read all about here. […]
