Last week I shared a new tutorial for creating a simple update to your front door. A DIY doormat that can be layered with a larger and wider door mat, of made to be placed out all on its own.
ÂI love updating certain areas in my home seasonally. Once place is typically the area in around my front door. However, I typically decorate the inside for my family and I to enjoy.
Today, I’m sharing my DIY doormat that you can place outside along with any other front porch decor you have. Plus, I am including a free DIY doormat stencil and SVG cut file that you can download from the Crafty Life Mom Resource Library.Â

Once you have all the materials you will need to set up an area to create. The dining room table or your craft table is a great place. I made this in front of my Dreambox cabinet as it has all my supplies within the craft storage cabinet at an arms reach.

- Black Acrylic paint
- Paint brush
- SealerSealer (optional)
- And your stencil of choice ( you can get the one I used from the Resource Library.
Cut your design stencil out in adhesive vinyl (this is a great low cost one to use) and remove the part you want to stencil from the design.
Note typically with stencils you remove the part you normally would leave when creating a decal. In this case, you want that to be the painted or stenciled part, so you would remove it, leaving the negative.
Next, you will want to adhere the stencil to your mat. You can do this two ways, and I actually show both in my video above. You can carefully lay it on the mat, or use transfer tape or film.
Then you are ready to paint.
Using your paint and a paint brush paint and dab down into the fibers of the mat the mat to make sure you get a good coverage. You can always go back and touch up the edges, but its best to make sure you get a nice even coat on the stencil as best as possible.
In doing this though, do not glob on too much paint at once because you don’t want to smudge it out over the edges of your stencil.
It is much easier to add more than it is is to take away when it comes to this project.
Finishing the DIY Doormat
Once you are done painting and you have let dry a few minutes remove the stencil. Admire you design. Allow to dry and then come back with a sealer if you so choose.
I did not use a sealer with my mat in the video, however, I’m thinking about going back and adding a thin coat of sealer since I plan to use this doormat outside in our pool area which is often wet.
You can easier also layer the mat or leave as is.
These simple DIY Doormats make great gifts that you can also personalize using your Silhouette or Cricut cutting machine.
The possibilities are truly endless!
