Create a cute and adorable Sunflower Door Hanger with this tutorial. This DIY project is simple to recreate and make all your own with just an MDF blank and paints.
I have been enjoying all of the crafts I have been doing to decorate my own for Fall. And one of the best ways to transition your home decor from Summer to Fall is with sunflowers.
Sunflowers are great because they are still bright and sunny for Summer, yet also remind us of the coming fall.

I had been wanting to try my hand at painting a door hanger, and I knew that Southern Adoornments was the place to find the perfectly cut MDF sunflower for this project.

If you are interested in creating this cute Sunflower for your decor. Then you will want to gather up your supplies and materials.
Once you have all the materials you will need to set up an area to create. The dining room table or your craft table is a great place. I made this in front of my Dreambox cabinet as it has all my supplies within the craft storage cabinet at an arms reach.

- Sunflower Door Hanger Blank – By Southern Adoornments
- Acrylic paints or your favorite craft/chalk paints
- Paint Brushes
- Wood beads
- Two pip-cleaners
- Ribbons for the bow (this is optional if you want the bow)
- Sealer (optional)
Note* I did not seal my final project. I recommend sealing the project with some sort of wax or polyurethane sealer to preserve the paint of this project for longer wear and use.
Making the Sunflower Door Hanger
First, you need to start with a base yellow to paint your flower petals. I chose a medium average yellow shade. Once you paint all your petals you can go back and add more, or shade with different colors and hues.
I then paint the center of my sunflower brown and let it dry.
Next, using different shades and tones of yellows and oranges, I added shading at the bottom of the petals where it meets the brown to give this sunflower dimension.
This was also done at the tips of the flower petals using a lighter shade and even a white paint to help lighten the tips of the flower petals.
Then, I used my white paint to create dots on the brown center for a fun whimsical look.
Lastly, I added some highlights and definition using both white and brown to the flower petals. I like to think of this part as if it were makeup contouring.
I know that is crazy sounding, however, this is how I highlight and bronze my cheeks when wearing makeup, and the idea works the same when painting anything that needs to show depth.
Finishing the Door Hanger
Once all of the painting was done, I then, added the beads to the pipe cleaner and strung it the holes. I added my own holes with a simple drill.
Then I finished off my piece with a ribbon bow and actual silk sunflower for the center. Then I hung up the door hanger to enjoy!
